“painting which appear to say the least are often paradoxically the most informed and eloquent.”(p3)
“You look at the picture, and you look at the surface, then you look at the reflection in the surface behind you, then you look at yourself._ Gary Hume”
"Painters make meaning by doing things with paint...Painters may use their materials to make pictures of the world, or of the emotions They may tell stories They may deny that very possibility and choose to make arrangements of colour and form. Such paintings may perform a decorative function, or resist that. Some painters may come to despise the idea of arrangement and composition, and simply present colour on form. The activity of painting can be spontaneous, or slow and deliberate, imbued with prior thought. It can be nave or philosophical light-hearted or depressed, angst-ridden or numb."(p5)
"Part pragmatic solution to a problem of his own making, this simple re-orientation made it possible to see, in a whole newway, the painted marks as the record ofan act, a reference to themselves and not to anything outside the area ofthe finished painting."
"beauty is deployed as a negative force to create a sublime of denial." (p8)

The seemingly abstract works are rich in metaphor, oscillating between abstraction and figuration. His work is mostly represented in paint, where seemingly everyday objects are given extraordinary meanings. The use of paint on aluminium panels creates a strong reflective effect, with different lights allowing the viewer to enter these images. At the same time his work is very soft, using living, pop symbols that evoke emotions in the viewer.
